New Years by Tanner Howard

They were a roman candle set
 against the fleshy expanse of night
 whose momentary light cleaned
 the dark from the stars, as if wiping
 sleep from the eyes of God
 and made the rest of us look up
 to wonder what our own lives were about.
 

Tanner Howard is an emerging writer currently enrolled in Georgia College and State University, working towards an English Major with a concentration in creative writing. He loves camping, hiking, heavy music, and his dog, an old boxer named Pinky.
