The Quiet

by Sandra Lang deRive

I pause by the old Oak tree

for a moment

to listen to the quiet

First, hearing the frost-laden leaves

Slowly drifting to the ground

As if they were the soft steps of passing ghosts

A slightly eerie but calming sound

Crisp evening air surrounds me

Bringing frozen drops of water to kiss my skin

White flakes float down from a darkened starry sky

Designed by nature…Winter begins

Feeling absorbed in its gentle arrival

The end of my day turning into night

I belong in these moments

For now,

To just stand here

and listen to the quiet.

The Author

Sandra Lang deRive is originally from rural eastern Pennsylvania but the lure of exciting career opportunities and adventures in big city Chicago persuaded her to settle into permanent residency there with her husband, two sons, and Chihuahua rescue, “Master Chi.” She has held a variety of jobs starting as a teenager at Hershey Park, PA., then to Chicago as a railroad teletype and telegraph operator, patent law, fire and police law, and general law secretary, real estate assistant, airline customer service, and now semi-retired as a school bus driver. In her part-time business, she was a mobile DJ for 20 years. The vast interests in her former careers also influence the variety of subjects she writes about in her poems, short stories, and novellas. Currently, she is working on her fairytale romance novel.
